I did not run into the crime horror stories from the chats - I walked around with a camera and no one bothered me. Yes, it is a bit dirty, but there are great eateries on every corner and lively character, and the locals treat us very warmly.
Naples itself is inexpensive compared with the rest of Italy. We searched via the big sites, offered several months of prepayment and always insisted on a contract - that is how we found a place. The south is the south: cheap and warm, but you pay for it in convenience.
