How to fill the postal KIT (Modulo 209)

What the KIT (kit postale) is and why it matters

The KIT (kit permesso, kit postale) is the paper Mod. 209 application in a Poste Italiane envelope with which you ask to convert your national visa D into a permesso di soggiorno - the plastic residence card. The same form is filed for renewals. Where to get the envelope and how much time you have

The envelope is free at a Poste Italiane office - go to the Sportello Amico counter and ask for the kit permesso (also known as the kit giallo). The community notes envelopes can be scarce, handed out one per person and in person only; central offices in big cities are often "out", so a residential district or suburb office is the smarter bet. Each family member from roughly age 14 needs their own KIT; younger children are written into their parents' forms. The clock matters most: per the community you have about 8 days after entering on a visa D, the deadline is treated as strict, and filling the form takes hours - so pick the envelope up on day one. Modulo 1 vs Modulo 2: which to fill in

The envelope holds two modules. Modulo 1 is the main one, with personal data and the motive (a typology code from Tabella 2) - everyone fills it; family members joining and children often need only it. Modulo 2 covers work and income: lavoro autonomo fills the autonomo, Partita IVA and income sections, nomade digitale declares income the same way, while residenza elettiva usually skips Modulo 2 - means are proven with separate documents. Write strictly in black pen, block letters, one character per box; leave the envelope unsealed - the operator checks it. You will need a codice fiscale, an Italian phone number and an address with its CAP - the address determines your questura; the first registration steps are covered in codice fiscale and residenza.

Marca da bollo, enclosures and the ricevuta

The form travels with a marca da bollo of about 16 euro (the revenue stamp is sold at a tabaccheria - the sign with a T), copies of all passport pages including the entry stamp, and a copy of the visa D annotation; families add certificates with an apostille and sworn translation (how to legalize them - in the document legalization guide). At the counter the operator checks your passport, takes the fees (about 30 euro postal fee plus the permesso fee, per the community) and hands over the ricevuta - two receipts with the assicurata and istanza numbers and a sheet with the fingerprints date. Guard it: until the card is issued it is your only proof of legal stay, and whether you can travel on it is unpacked in travelling on the ricevuta.

How much does filing the KIT cost?

What if I make a mistake in the module?

Before handing it in it is simple: the envelope stays unsealed and the post operator checks your data against the passport before accepting, so chats advise pencilling everything first and only then tracing in black pen. A mistake noticed after filing is usually raised at the fingerprints appointment, per the community. The country-of-birth code field is especially treacherous: for those born in the USSR a wrong code can stall the card for months, and fixing it goes through the comune and the Agenzia delle Entrate. Check every field before sending.

When do I get the ricevuta?

Right at the counter: the Sportello Amico operator checks your passport against the form, takes the fees and hands over the ricevuta on the spot - two Poste receipts with the assicurata and istanza numbers, plus a sheet with the questura address and fingerprints date. Nothing arrives by mail later. Guard it: until the card is ready the ricevuta proves your legal stay, and per the community the original even allows trips to non-Schengen countries with return through an Italian border crossing.

What happens if I miss the 8-day KIT window?

Per the community you have about 8 days after entering on a visa D, and the deadline is treated as strict: miss it and the application may not be accepted, leaving the legality of your stay hanging. The community describes no official grace period, so the advice is to pick up the envelope on day one.
