Sending money from Russia to Italy in 2026: what works
Euro from Russia reach Italy in 2026 via SWIFT from OTP, CIS bank cards, crypto and cash. Unistream and Korona do not work; the bank will ask the source.
Author: permesso.love editorial team- updated - how we verify
In short: sending euro from a large Russian bank straight to an Italian account is close to impossible in 2026 - those banks are sanctioned and do not send SWIFT. Per chat data to June 2026, money gets through four ways: SWIFT from a non-sanctioned bank, a card or account at a bank in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan or Belarus, crypto, and cash carried in person. Unistream and Zolotaya Korona do not send to Italy. Whatever route you choose, the Italian bank will ask where the money came from, and without an EU residence permit you cannot hold more than EUR 100,000 at one bank.
This page covers the Italian side: what gets through and what the bank will accept. The Russian rules (Bank of Russia limits, notifying the Russian tax service of a foreign account, taking cash out) are covered in moving money out of Russia: CBR limits and cash. The months of the latest successful and problem reports for each route are in the tool below, and what the chats reported month by month since June 2026 (BCC, the Tsifra-Freedom link, Revolut, Kyrgyz banks) is in the log on the routes page. This is not financial or legal advice and not advice on circumventing sanctions; it is about legally transferring your own funds.

Why Unistream, Zolotaya Korona and T-Bank are not on the list
These names are the ones most often searched together with "transfer to Italy", so separately:
- Unistream. 257 mentions in 2022, 94 in 2023, 7 in 2024, 2 in 2025, none in 2026. In February 2024 people wrote that Italy was not offered as a destination, in April 2024 that from Russia to Italy it "has not worked for about a year". The last 2025 mentions are about ordering a Kyrgyz bank card through it, not about sending money to Italy.
- Zolotaya Korona. 50 mentions in 2022, 58 in 2023, 16 in 2024, 12 in 2025, 2 in 2026. In 2025-2026 it is named as a way to send money to CIS countries; there are no direct reports of transfers to Italy in those years. In April 2025 people wrote that the service had been sanctioned.
- T-Bank and other large banks. Messages mentioning T-Bank (Tinkoff) next to SWIFT or a transfer to Italy number 26 in 2022-2025 (17 of them in 2022), the last in August 2025, none in 2026.
- Little-known "transfer to Italy" services. If a service does not appear in the discussions or on banks' official sites, treat it as an unknown counterparty: check it against the red flags and start with a small amount.
Think about money before you move, not after. Ideally you have income in euro from the start. Then the question "how do I get rubles to Italy" turns from a monthly headache into a rare task, and you do not depend on which channel is alive today and which one closed yesterday.
What an Italian bank will accept: the EUR 100,000 cap and residence permits
The key rule for an account in Italy is Article 5b of EU Regulation 833/2014. It prohibits EU banks from accepting deposits from Russian nationals and people residing in Russia if that person's total deposits at one bank exceed EUR 100,000. The same article prohibits providing crypto-asset wallet, account or custody services to Russian nationals and people residing in Russia.
Both bans do not apply to people holding a temporary or permanent residence permit in an EU country, the EEA or Switzerland, or to citizens of those countries (Art. 5b(3)). So with a permesso di soggiorno the EUR 100,000 cap does not apply to you. The law does not say how a bank treats the application receipt (ricevuta) before the card is issued - ask your bank.
What the chats said (chat data to June 2026): in June 2024 a bank employee said "more than 100 thousand in the account is no problem" for a residence permit holder; in October 2024 that without a permit sums above EUR 100,000 get blocked; in September 2025 people argued whether a permit lifts the restriction (per the regulation's text, it does). Who opens accounts for Russian citizens and how - in an account for Russian and Belarusian citizens and which bank will open an account.
Source of funds: what the bank asks and what to show
Every route above ends with one question from the Italian bank: where did the money come from (provenienza dei fondi). The bank asks not out of distrust of you personally but because anti-money-laundering law obliges it to; a link to Russia is a risk factor, so the question arrives even with a completely clean history.
Typical cases from the chats in 2025-2026 (chat data to June 2026, retold without names):
- Paying in cash. October 2025: when EUR 7,700 was paid in at a branch, the bank asked how to explain it; "personal savings" (risparmi personali) was accepted. February 2026: the same bank warned that next time proof of origin would be needed; paying in through an ATM also requires an explanation.
- An incoming transfer frozen. January 2026: the bank asked for documents, after they were sent the payment hung in checks, and the branch director demanded a personal meeting before releasing it.
- Name and address in the payment. November 2025: a transfer with a name in the order not matching the account holder's took about a week; December 2025: a payment was returned because of the sender's Russian address.
- Crypto platforms. April 2026: an exchange used for three years asked for a source-of-funds certificate; an income certificate from online work, in Italian, closed the question.
What to have ready in advance:
- a statement from the account the money came from, with clear regular income;
- an income certificate or a tax return;
- a sale contract for a flat, a car or shares, if the money comes from a sale;
- for money from relatives - proof of kinship and a note that it is a gift (how to formalise a large gift under Italian rules, ask a notary or a commercialista);
- for cash - the customs declaration if you brought in EUR 10,000 or more, and the withdrawal statement.
Answer the request briefly and exactly on what was asked, and keep copies. Do not fake documents: file metadata and rescans show, and the account gets closed afterwards. Keep a backup account - a check can drag on even with a clean history.
I got a source-of-funds request even though the money was completely clean - my savings and transfers from my parents. I attached a statement and a short explanation, not a three-page essay. You show real documents, answer to the point, and the question is closed.
Cash: bringing it into Italy and paying it in
- Bringing it in: under EUR 10,000 - freely; from EUR 10,000 in cash (or the equivalent in another currency) per person a declaration is filed with customs on entry (Agenzia delle Dogane; the rule applies at all EU borders). Customs can detain undeclared cash.
- Taking it out of Russia: foreign cash - no more than USD 10,000; details in the cash section of moving money out of Russia.
- Spending in Italy: cash payments between different persons are prohibited from EUR 5,000 (Art. 49 of Legislative Decree 231/2007); rent and large purchases are paid by transfer.
- Paying into an account: be ready to explain the origin (see the cases above). Currency exchange and ATMs - in cash in Italy.
Crypto: only if you already know how
The scheme from the chats: rubles -> USDT via P2P on an exchange using Russian documents -> sale for euro and withdrawal to an account or a crypto card in the EU (chat data to June 2026: 62 messages in January-June 2026). Three caveats:
- with an EU residence permit the Art. 5b ban on crypto services for Russian nationals does not apply; without one it does;
- exchanges and services opened on Italian documents, per messages from 2025-2026, pass data to the tax office - crypto income must be declared (see crypto and taxes for emigrants);
- the rules of a safe P2P deal (do not confirm before the money arrives, counterparty rating, a small test amount) are in safe P2P crypto exchange.
Common mistakes
- "I will send it via Unistream." Per the chats it has not sent to Italy since 2023.
- "The Bank of Russia will not let more than a million a month out." For transfers from your own account there is no Bank of Russia limit in 2026; banks and sanctions are what restrict you.
- "With a permesso the EUR 100,000 cap still applies." No: Art. 5b expressly excludes people with an EU residence permit.
- "Nobody will ask where the money came from." They will, especially when you pay in cash or receive a transfer from a third-country bank.
- "Whatever channel the chat names is the one that works." Routes close within months; check the dates of the latest reports in the routes tool.

Frequently asked questions
Can you transfer euro from Russia to an Italian account in 2026?
Directly from a large Russian bank - hardly: sanctioned banks do not send SWIFT. Per chat data to June 2026, money gets through by SWIFT from a non-sanctioned bank (in 2026 mostly OTP Bank, with a fee of about 3% and odds put at 50/50), a card or account at a bank in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan or Belarus, crypto, and cash carried in person. The Italian bank will almost always ask where the money came from. This is not financial advice.
Does Unistream or Zolotaya Korona work for transfers to Italy?
Per the chats - no. Unistream was mentioned 257 times in 2022, 94 in 2023, 7 in 2024, 2 in 2025 and not once in 2026; in April 2024 people wrote it had not worked to Italy for about a year. In February 2024 Italy was missing from Zolotaya Korona's country list, and in 2025-2026 it is mentioned only for transfers to CIS countries. Check on the service's own site.
What is the EUR 100,000 limit for Russians at a European bank?
Article 5b of EU Regulation 833/2014 prohibits EU banks from accepting deposits from Russian nationals or people residing in Russia if their total at one bank exceeds EUR 100,000. The ban does not apply to people with a temporary or permanent residence permit in an EU country, the EEA or Switzerland. This is not legal advice; ask your bank how it applies the rule to your document.
What source-of-funds documents does an Italian bank ask for?
Most often a statement from the account the money came from, an income certificate or a contract for the sale of property, and for money from relatives - proof of kinship and a note that it is a gift. When you pay in cash the bank also asks about its origin: chats reported such questions for amounts from EUR 7,700. Never fake documents - it shows and leads to the account being closed.
How much cash can you bring into Italy?
Under EUR 10,000 - freely; from EUR 10,000 per person a written declaration is required at customs on entry (Agenzia delle Dogane, EU Regulation 2018/1672). Foreign cash taken out of Russia is capped at USD 10,000. Cash payments between people in Italy are prohibited from EUR 5,000. This is not legal advice.
