Italy long stay visa (visa D): choosing your route

An Italy long stay visa (visa D) is needed for stays over 90 days and has one purpose. How to pick it: lavoro autonomo, nomad, elective residence, family.

Author: permesso.love editorial team- updated - how we verify

Choosing an Italian residence permit route comes down to four things: where your income comes from, whether you have a profession, whether you are moving with family and whether you will work for clients inside Italy. For remote workers with foreign income it is usually lavoro autonomo or the digital nomad, for passive income - , for relatives of a resident - the family route. There is no single universal relocation visa: each basis (motive) requires first a visa D and then a .

The most common routes for Russian-speaking applicants are lavoro autonomo (independent activity, freelancing and entrepreneurship), the digital nomad (nomade digitale - remote work for clients and employers outside Italy or inside it), residenza elettiva (living on passive income with no right to work) and family reunification. Each route checks different things and has its own income thresholds, which according to the community are constantly being revised, so always verify the exact figures on the official sites.

In brief: community data

  • Four things determine the basis: per the community - where the income comes from, whether you have a profession, whether you are moving with family and whether you work for clients inside Italy.
  • Common routes: lavoro autonomo, the digital nomad, residenza elettiva (passive income with no right to work) and family reunification; each has its own income thresholds, which per the community are constantly revised.
  • Nomad vs autonomo: the fork comes down to speed vs prospects - the nomad is faster and outside the quotas but costs more in taxes and gives no free healthcare; autonomo is slower but has lower taxes, the through and a path to permanent residence.
  • A persistent myth: per the community the self-employment quotas in the Decreto Flussi apply to Russian citizens too rather than bypassing them; the nomad, meanwhile, runs outside the quotas.
  • What does not grant a permit: neither buying property nor an open is a basis by itself - a separate motive is needed (verify what is current).

What is an Italy long stay visa and how do you get one?

In short: the long stay visa is the national visa D, issued for more than 90 days and always for one purpose. The purpose on the visa becomes the basis of your permesso di soggiorno, so choosing a long stay visa is choosing its basis - the rest of this page. What the Italian consulates state (pages read on 30.09.2026):

The documents, fees and waiting times for each consulate are collected on the Italy D visa page. Two common English-language cases have their own pages: the Italy retirement visa (retiring on a pension through elective residence, with the 7% tax regime in the South) and moving to Italy from the UK (the London consulate, S1, the licence exchange).

Lavoro autonomo or digital nomad - what is the difference?

In short: the nomad is faster (outside the quotas, no , documents at home), but the income threshold is higher, healthcare is private and there is no direct conversion; lavoro autonomo is slower (quotas, Nulla Osta, some papers in Italy), but taxes are lower, the SSN comes through INPS and there is a clear path to permanent residence. The detailed comparison by income, timelines, taxes and conversion is in Digital Nomad or Lavoro Autonomo, and the figures for both routes are in the income and tax calculator.

Where does income come from and do you have a profession?

Most mistakes at the start come from a person choosing a route by its name rather than by their situation. So answer a few questions honestly.

  • Income from remote work for clients or an employer (can be abroad, or Italian). This is digital nomad territory, especially if you need to enter faster. The nomad, by the way, is not only for IT people - it suits all professions that work remotely.
  • Independent activity, freelancing or your own business that you are ready to run from Italy. This is lavoro autonomo: lower thresholds, but quotas and a Nulla Osta are mandatory.
  • Passive income (rent, dividends, savings) with no intention to work in Italy. This is residenza elettiva - a calm status for the financially independent, but you cannot work on it.
  • Someone close to you is already moving or living in Italy on their own residence permit. Then your route is the family one, through reunification or the al seguito visa.

I was confused for a long time until I sat down and wrote out two things point by point: who pays me and in what capacity I plan to live in the country. After that the picture came together - my remote-work format clearly fit the nomad, and it became clear that all the fuss with quota documents was simply a waste of energy for me.

And if you are moving with family?

Then the route has two parts: the main basis for the principal applicant and a separate path for family members. An important change of recent years is that classic family reunification is no longer available immediately: according to the community, for those who have recently moved it opens up only after a certain period of residence in Italy, and until then an alternative works - the al seguito (accompanying) visa. Which option suits whom and how they differ is broken down in the article Ricongiungimento or coesione and in the general section on family.

We first thought we would go separately and reunite later, but it turned out that classic reunification for newcomers is no longer immediate. In the end my husband got a visa D on his own motive, and my child and I were processed through . If we had known in advance, we would not have lost a couple of months.

Chats talk about so-called "bold reunification": one spouse on a visa D, the other with children on a tourist C, you enter strictly on the same day and immediately apply together for a permesso with a letter along the lines of "do not separate the family." The key is precisely the simultaneous entry - separately the scheme does not work. And keep in mind the risk on the other side: I know a case where a wife was refused a tourist Schengen precisely because the husband already had a visa D, the wording was about an incorrectly stated purpose of travel.

Can you change the route later?

A common question - and the answer depends on the status. Some things change as early as the consular stage: according to the community, during a drawn-out lavoro autonomo review (especially when there are no clients and agreements in Italy) the consulate itself sometimes offers to issue a digital nomad visa - and after the missing documents are submitted it is issued faster. This is not a guarantee, but such a scenario does occur.

Further on, though, statuses behave differently. A lavoro autonomo permesso can, according to the community, be switched to another basis on renewal. The digital nomad has no direct conversion into a work status according to the community - a transition is possible, but you prepare for it in advance, with the necessary bases and documents. So it is better to choose the route deliberately from the very start.

The most expensive mistake is to put off the choice for later on the principle of "I will enter and figure it out there." If you want one day to move from nomad to autonomo, you need to build the documentary and tax trail for it from the first day in Italy, not remember it a month before renewal.

Do not count on a future conversion as a guarantee: the rules change on the fly. A fresh example - a status that as recently as spring could be transferred to a work one was banned from being transferred after amendments. And the court-based family path through a child has also been rewritten more than once. What works now may not work by the time of your renewal, so it is better to have a solid base from the very start.

Myths that waste time and money

The same misconceptions surface in chats month after month. The three most persistent:

  • "Russian citizens are outside the Decreto Flussi quotas." No. The decree lists only priority countries, but the self-employment quotas apply to all third-country nationals, including Russians. Without a current decree a lavoro autonomo visa is not issued.
  • "Buying property grants a residence permit." No: your own home is a plus for the housing question, but not a basis for a permesso. Breakdown: Myth: buying property gets you Italian residency.
  • "Opened a Partita IVA - got the right to live in Italy." No: a sole proprietorship does not equal a right to reside, and a pre-opened Partita IVA is not even part of the mandatory package for a visa D. Breakdown: Myth: a Partita IVA by itself grants a permesso.

In the comments people confidently told me that Russians go "outside the quotas" because our country is not in the decree. In the end a person picked a bad moment and simply missed the application window. The quotas exist, and they run out fast - this has to be factored into planning.

Dmitry, communitypersonal opinionThis is a community member's personal opinion, not legal advice.
  • The scale of the quotas is easy to underestimate. According to the community, the self-employment window is not thousands of slots, but on the order of a few hundred for the whole country, and split across several categories at once (entrepreneurs, artists, musicians, startup founders). So "making it into the decree" is a planning task in itself, not a formality. The exact numbers differ every year - check the current decree on interno.gov.it.

The logic of the decree is simple: the list names countries that have a special migration agreement with Italy - that is a privileged channel. Russia is not there not because it was "exempted" from the quotas, but because there is no separate agreement. The general quotas, meanwhile, apply to all third countries. The quota is tied to the category of work, not to the applicant's country - that is the key detail that is confused most often.

What else to keep in mind at the start

  • Tax residency is a separate story from a residence permit. According to the community, obtaining a permesso does not by itself automatically make you a tax resident: residency arises when you stay in Italy more than a certain number of days a year or when your center of vital interests ends up in Italy. It is worth discussing this with a in advance.
  • Visa D review times vary greatly. According to the community - from a few days to a year, depending on the consulate and the route. Build in a buffer and do not tie tickets and the move to optimistic dates; the timeline helps you estimate the stages.
  • Figures are volatile. Income thresholds, account balances and timelines according to the community constantly change - before applying always verify the current details on the official sites.

Frequently asked questions

What is an Italy long stay visa?

It is the Italian national visa, type D, for stays longer than 90 days. It is always issued for one purpose, such as elective residence, work, self-employment, study or family, and within 8 working days of arrival you apply for a permesso di soggiorno for the same purpose. While you wait for the permit, the visa lets you travel in other Schengen countries for up to 90 days. You apply in person at the Italian consulate for the place where you legally live. Checked on the Italian Consulate General in London site on 30.09.2026.

Do UK or other visa-free citizens need an Italy long stay visa?

Yes, for more than 90 days in any 180. Visa-free travel, for example for UK citizens, covers only short stays in the whole Schengen area, and overstaying can bring an entry ban of up to 3 years according to gov.uk. To live in Italy you need a visa D and then a permesso di soggiorno; UK citizens apply through the Italian Consulate General in London and VFS Global.

Where do I start when choosing an Italian residence permit route?

With an honest description of your situation: where your income comes from, whether you have a job with an Italian employer, what your profession is and who is moving with you. Those answers determine which basis for a visa D suits you. The route matcher gives a quick orientation, then cross-check official sources - this is not legal advice.

Lavoro autonomo or digital nomad - which to choose?

According to the community, the choice comes down to speed versus prospects. The digital nomad works without quotas or Nulla Osta, documents are collected abroad and entry is faster, but the income threshold is higher and there is no free healthcare. Lavoro autonomo is slower and tied to quotas, but taxes are lower, healthcare runs through INPS, you can work for Italian clients and there is a clear path to permanent residence. This is not legal advice.

Can you change your route or motive later?

According to the community, some things change as early as the consular stage: with a long lavoro autonomo review they sometimes offer to issue a digital nomad visa instead. But statuses convert differently: a lavoro autonomo permesso can be switched to another basis on renewal, while the digital nomad has no direct conversion into a work status according to the community. So it is better to choose the route deliberately at the start - verify the current rules on esteri.it and interno.gov.it, this is not legal advice.

Is it true that Russian citizens are not subject to Decreto Flussi quotas?

According to the community, this is a persistent myth. The decree lists countries with priority, but the self-employment quotas themselves apply to all third-country nationals, including Russians. Without a current decree a lavoro autonomo visa is not issued. The digital nomad runs outside the quotas - that is a different article of the law. Cross-check official sources, this is not legal advice.

Does buying property or opening a Partita IVA grant a residence permit?

According to the community - no. Neither your own property nor an opened business is in itself a basis for a permesso: you need a separate motive (work, self-employment, family, passive income). Detailed breakdowns of these two myths are in this section. This is not legal advice.

How many lavoro autonomo quotas are allocated in total?

According to the community, the self-employment quotas in the annual decree number not in the thousands but in the hundreds for the whole country, and they are split across several categories at once (entrepreneurs, artists, musicians, startup founders). So the window closes fast, and getting into it is a planning task in itself. The exact numbers differ every year - check the current decree on interno.gov.it, this is not legal advice.
