Permesso di soggiorno renewal: kit, timing, ricevuta
How to renew the permesso di soggiorno: the KIT 90 days before expiry (D.Lgs 83/2026), how renewal documents differ, ricevuta, fingerprints, questura.
Author: permesso.love editorial team- updated - how we verify
Renewing the permesso di soggiorno is, according to the community, a fairly simple procedure, but it has its own nuances that make it easy to start getting nervous ahead of time. The first permesso is usually issued for 1-2 years, and its term ends faster than it seems: you barely finish all the initial matters before it is already time to renew. The good news is that the mechanics of renewal almost repeat the first submission via the post office: the same KIT, the same sending, the same fingerprints at the questura. The main difference is the package of documents - at renewal you have to prove that your motivo (activity, income, family) really continues. Let us go through everything step by step. This is not legal advice - always verify the deadlines, fees and questura practice on the official websites.
In brief: community data. Benchmarks for renewal from the discussions (amounts and timelines are community-reported, verify current rules):
- Filing benchmark. From June 2026 (D.Lgs 83/2026) the KIT for renewal is filed no later than 90 days before the card expires (the law used to say 60); the same 90-day term is now given to the questura to decide. Filing earlier is allowed. Verify the current text on interno.gov.it / normattiva.it.
- Not to be confused with being overdue. A separate rule that did not change: if the card has expired by more than 60 days and no KIT has been filed, the stay is treated as illegal. That is about being late, not about the filing window.
- Do not file too early. If fingerprints are scheduled before the old card expires, the new term may be counted from that early date - several people described "losing a month or two" of the term they had paid for.
- Appuntamento. The fingerprint date is often given several months after the KIT is filed; this is normal while the ricevuta is on you. Real waits differ by city - see the questura pages for Milan, Rome and Turin.
- Ricevuta at banks. The postal bank usually accepts the ricevuta, while some mobile banks (Revolut, for example) block the account once the card expires and do not recognise the ricevuta as a substitute - keep a backup bank.
- Fees. The marca da bollo is often bought at a 16 EUR denomination per envelope, plus the state fee and the KIT charge; for children the amount is usually reduced.
This article is about the mechanics of renewal itself (KIT, documents, ricevuta, fingerprints). A separate rule about how a long absence from Italy affects renewal and permanent residence is covered in the material on renewal and absence.
When to apply for permesso renewal?
The main rule is not to drag it out to the last day. From June 2026 (D.Lgs 83/2026, Gazzetta Ufficiale no. 115 of 20.05.2026, implementing EU Directive 2024/1233) the statutory benchmark for filing the KIT for renewal is no later than 90 days before the card's term expires; before that, art. 5 of the Testo unico said 60 days. The same decree aligned the term given to the questura to decide on issue, renewal and conversion to 90 days. Submission via the post office fixes the date of application, and it is precisely that date that matters: after that the queue at the questura moves at its own pace. Check the text of the rule on interno.gov.it and normattiva.it - this is not legal advice.
It is important not to confuse two different rules that both mention "days":
- Filing benchmark - 90 days before expiry. This is the rule about when to send the KIT. Filing earlier is allowed; filing later, while the card is still valid, does not make you illegal, but it is better to keep to the new term because questura schedules adjust to it.
- Overdue after expiry - 60 days. This is a different rule, and it did not change: if the card has expired by more than 60 days and no renewal was ever filed, the stay is treated as illegal. It is about being late, not about how early to file.
A strict upper limit on "how early" is usually not named in the community: in regions where the fingerprints are waited for half a year or more, people deliberately submit the KIT well in advance, so that the appuntamento does not move far past the expiry date and you do not have to live with an expired card for a long time.
An overly early submission has, according to the community, its own pitfall: if the fingerprints are scheduled for you even before the old card expires, the count of the new permesso may be started from this early date, and a chunk of the paid-for term (sometimes a month or two) is effectively lost. Several people in the community described exactly this: "I applied too early - I lost a month". In some questuras, with a very early appearance, they even say outright that they will issue the card with the previous expiry date. So the balance is simple: dragging it out to the last moment is dangerous, but there is also no point in rushing half a year ahead without a reason - go by the real queues in your city.
Because of the questuras' workload, the appuntamento for fingerprints is often scheduled even after the permesso's expiry date. For some time you live with an expired card and a fresh ricevuta - and as long as the application was submitted on time, by law this is considered normal. So there is no need to panic if the appointment is given several months away: you hold the ricevuta, and this is your confirmation.
From June 2026 the filing benchmark is 90 days before the card ends, not 60 as before. You can file earlier, but look at the queues in your region: where the fingerprints are given quickly there is no need to rush half a year ahead, where they are waited for long it is better to apply earlier, so as not to sit for months with an expired plastic. And do not confuse this benchmark with the 60-days-overdue rule after expiry - that one is about being late with no case filed.
I played it safe and applied for renewal well in advance. As a result the fingerprints were scheduled even before the old card expired, and the new term was counted from that early date - one month, as it were, dissolved for me. Not critical, but now I know: there is no need to rush ahead without necessity, it is better to aim by your own queues.
I had not really finished the initial documents when the renewal was already due. I sent the KIT well ahead, the appuntamento was given several months later, already after the old card had expired. The main thing was not to panic and to carry the ricevuta with me.
To estimate exactly when to start gathering for your city, the timeline helps - it collects benchmarks for the stages from the KIT to the plastic.
Step 1: get the KIT for renewal at the post office
The first step is to go to the post office and get the KIT for renewal (it is called the kit postale). According to the community, this is exactly the same envelope as for the first submission, and the form itself is free. Inside the KIT is printed an instruction on what exactly to put into it depending on your motivo - it is worth reading it carefully before assembling the package.
The KIT itself consists of the same Mod. 209 modules (Modulo 1 and Modulo 2) as for the initial submission. A few important points on filling it in:
- the data is entered exactly as written in the passport;
- at renewal you fill in information about the current residence permit (number and expiry date);
- the fields about the visa are not filled in - the visa was relevant only for the first entry;
- in the income module, for the main applicant you indicate income for the previous year;
- Sezione 2 is filled in only after both modules are completely arranged and copies of all documents have been made, otherwise the post office will not accept the application.
A convenient breakdown of the form's fields with explanations is in the KIT builder:
The renewal is arranged not online, but through a post office branch. The person gets an envelope there, enters the data following the sample, takes it all to the window, and on submission pays off the state fee. Compared with the first submission only a few nuances are added: the data of the current card instead of the visa, and income for the previous year.
Step 2: gather the documents - what differs from the first submission
This is the key difference between renewal and the initial process. If at the first submission you proved that you had the right to begin life in Italy, then at renewal you need to show that your motivo really continues
- the activity is being carried out, there is income, the family is together. The exact list of enclosures is always printed inside the KIT itself, but the benchmarks according to the community are these.
For the self-employed (lavoro autonomo):
- a fresh income declaration for the previous year (or a balance from the commercialista, if the declaration has not yet been submitted);
- confirmation of an active Partita IVA;
- a visura camerale - an extract from the chamber of commerce (not needed for all types of activity);
- copies of all pages of the passport;
- a copy of the current permesso;
- depending on the situation - contracts and confirmations of work with clients, showing that the activity has not ceased.
For reunification (family motivo):
- copies of all pages of the passport;
- a copy of the current permesso;
- a statement from the main applicant requesting the renewal of your permesso;
- according to the community, some questuras at a family renewal also ask for the idoneita alloggiativa - the housing suitability certificate; the queue for it in some comuni stretches to months, so check the requirement in advance.
Two 2026 trends worth knowing about in advance (community-reported, not a legal rule):
- An open Partita IVA at renewal. By participants' accounts, the questuras of Milan and several other large cities increasingly want to see an active Italian P.IVA when renewing lavoro autonomo and digital nomad permits, even if on the first permesso income was proven with a foreign contract and a bank statement. This is local practice, not a legal requirement, but arguing at the fingerprints is not the best idea: if a renewal is ahead, it is worth opening the P.IVA early. Some questuras accept a foreign tax declaration with a notarised translation as a supporting document, but Italian reporting still serves as the basis.
- Paid the fee for 2 years - got a 1-year card. At the first renewal the questura often issues the card for one year even when the 2-year fee was chosen and paid in the KIT, with the reasoning "let us first see how you work". The difference is usually not refunded. The term is decided by the questura, not by the paid receipt; at subsequent renewals the community more often reports 2-3 years. More on terms in the material on renewal and absence.
A separate situation the community often runs into: if, because of a long queue, your first permesso was issued already expired and you have to renew almost immediately, for the self-employed an income declaration for the previous year may surface - the very one that for the initial submission was usually not required. So the community advises submitting the declaration on time and keeping the tax office's confirmation of its submission at hand, even if on the first permesso there was formally no need to prove income. The exact list of enclosures is printed inside the KIT; check on portaleimmigrazione.it.
To select the enclosures precisely for your motivo and questura, the document package assembler helps.
At the lavoro autonomo renewal the main thing was to show that the activity was alive: I attached the declaration, the extract from the chamber and a couple of contracts with clients. I had basically no minimum income that year, but it turned out to be more important to prove the continuation of the work itself than the specific amount.
Step 3: marca da bollo and sending via the post office
Once the modules are filled in and copies are made, it remains to arrange the sending:
- Buy a marca da bollo at a tobacconist's - one per envelope (check the amount for the current year).
- Go to the post office with your passport and current permesso.
- Send the KIT through a post office employee - take a separate slip (ricevuta) for each envelope.
According to the community, on submission you pay a state fee for each adult (for a 2-year permesso it is higher than for one year), a separate charge for the KIT itself and a small post-office commission; for children up to a certain age the amount is usually reduced. For a family of several people the total is made up of these parts. The specific figures change from year to year - verify the current details on poste.it.
We applied for three people, each with their own envelope and their own marca da bollo, plus the charge for the KIT and a few cents of post-office commission on top. The sum added up to quite a bit, but everything was by receipt. The main thing is to buy the required number of stamps in advance, so as not to run to the tobacconist's from the window.
Step 4: ricevuta, appuntamento and fingerprints
After sending, what remains in hand is the ricevuta - a receipt from the post office that the KIT has been accepted, one per envelope. This is your main document during the wait: it confirms that you applied for renewal in time. It is worth carrying the original of the ricevuta with you.
During processing you will be given an appuntamento at the questura for fingerprints. According to the community, this date often turns out to be several months away - this is normal and does not mean trouble. You come to the appointment with the full set of documents:
- in the community's experience, what is enclosed inside the KIT is not always checked carefully at the appointment itself;
- but the documents brought to the fingerprints are studied in detail, so for the date of the appointment it is useful to prepare a duplicate of the whole package - exactly the same papers that went into the envelope;
- whatever is missing - you are usually asked to bring later.
For the fingerprint date I prepared a full duplicate of the package - exactly the same as what went into the envelope. What was inside the KIT they did not really look at, but at the appointment itself the documents were studied carefully. So it is better to come with copies of everything than to bring them later.
With the original of the ricevuta and an expired permesso you can leave Italy and return to it (to non-Schengen destinations) while you wait for the new card - more on this in the material on travelling with the ricevuta.
Step 5: wait for the card and track the status
After the fingerprints it remains to wait for the new plastic to be ready. The status of the application, according to the community, is checked on the questuras' portal: an orange cross usually means the case has been taken into processing, a green tick - that the card is ready for issue. An SMS about readiness does not always come (according to the community, in roughly one case out of four or five there is simply none), so you should not rely on it alone - many check the status themselves once every couple of weeks or come to the questura in person. How exactly to read the status on the portal and which number to search by is in the material on how to check your permesso status. If the case has been hanging well beyond the 90-day term, people write a sollecito to the PEC of your questura (the address is on questure.poliziadistato.it) - templates are in the article on PEC and accesso agli atti.
Because of the long timelines there is no need to worry: as long as the submission was on time and you hold the ricevuta, you are within the law. In the words of those who have moved, time in Italy flies imperceptibly, and an appuntamento many months away comes faster than it seems.
Another step that is, according to the community, easy to miss: after receiving the new card it is worth going to the comune and updating the permesso data there (noting the new number and term). Some comuni themselves remind you of this with a call while your old card is recorded as expired, but it is not worth relying on the reminder. This is not part of the renewal as such, but a small loose end that is better tied up at once, so that your registration and link to the address stay in order.
I applied in summer, gave fingerprints closer to the end of the year, and got the card even later. There was no SMS - I found out the plastic was ready only when I went to check the status myself. Now I do not count on notifications and check myself.
While I was waiting for the new plastic, the mobile bank went and blocked the card - the permesso term had expired in their system, and they did not accept the ricevuta. The account at the postal bank saved me, where the ricevuta is accepted calmly. So keep a backup bank in advance that will not fall off the moment the old card is overdue.
How many years the card is renewed for and why the term sometimes comes out shorter than what was paid for is in the material on renewal and absence.
Example: a renewal timeline
Let us gather all the steps into a single hypothetical timeline (the dates and name are synthetic, this is an illustration, not a calculation for your city - verify the real queues and deadlines on questure.poliziadistato.it). Say Egor's lavoro autonomo card is valid until 15 March, and the fingerprinting queues in his city are moderate.
- About 90 days out (mid-December). Egor goes to the post office and gets the free KIT for renewal (the kit postale), reads the instruction inside the envelope. He fills in Mod. 209: the data as in the passport, he enters the number and expiry date of the current card, does not touch the visa fields, and in the income module puts income for the previous year.
- 20 December - sending. He assembles the package for the self-employed: a fresh income declaration for the previous year, confirmation of an active Partita IVA, a visura camerale (if needed for his type of activity), copies of all passport pages, a copy of the current permesso, a couple of contracts with clients. He buys a marca da bollo (per the community often a 16 EUR denomination, but verify the amount for the current year) per envelope, sends the KIT through a post office employee and gets the ricevuta - the receipt of acceptance. He carries the original with him.
- The appuntamento is scheduled right then at the questura for fingerprints - in the example, say, early June, that is already after 15 March. This is normal: the submission is fixed on time, and with an expired card and a fresh ricevuta Egor is within the law.
- Early June - fingerprints. He comes with a full duplicate of the package (exactly what went into the envelope): at the appointment itself the documents are studied more carefully than the ones enclosed in the KIT. Whatever is missing is usually asked to be brought later.
- Autumn - the card is ready. An SMS may not come, so Egor checks the status on the questuras' portal himself once every couple of weeks: an orange cross means the case is in processing, a green tick means the card is ready for issue.
- After collection. He picks up the plastic and goes to the comune to update the permesso data (the new number and term), so that his registration stays in order.
The key point of the timeline: what matters is the date of submission of the KIT, not the date of the fingerprints. As long as it is filed on time and you hold the ricevuta, a long wait for the appuntamento and a couple of months with an expired card is a routine situation, not a problem. The dates here are hypothetical; verify the deadlines, fees and questura practice on the official websites. This is not legal advice.
I wrote out the whole renewal by dates, counting back from the card's term - and it immediately put me at ease. I filed the KIT about three months out, the appuntamento was given already after the card had expired, but with the ricevuta in hand I calmly lived until the fingerprints. The main thing was not to drag it to the last day and to carry the receipt with me.
My life hack is to prepare the duplicate package straight away, while you are still assembling the KIT. At the fingerprints it was precisely the papers I brought that were looked at carefully, not what was inside the envelope. A second identical set of copies saved me a repeat visit - I did not have to bring anything later.

Frequently asked questions
How far in advance should I submit the KIT for permesso renewal?
From June 2026 (D.Lgs 83/2026) the benchmark is to file the KIT for renewal no later than 90 days before the card's expiry date; before that the law said 60 days. Submission via the post office fixes the date of application, while the appuntamento at the questura is often scheduled later, and that is normal as long as you hold the ricevuta. Verify the current details on interno.gov.it and normattiva.it - this is not legal advice.
How do the renewal documents differ from the first submission?
According to the community, the main thing at renewal is to prove that your activity or motivo continues: for the self-employed this is a fresh income declaration, an active Partita IVA and a visura camerale, for family - a statement from the main applicant. The visa fields are not filled in; instead you enter the data of the current residence permit. The exact list of enclosures is printed inside the KIT; verify the current details on portaleimmigrazione.it.
What is the ricevuta at renewal and why is it needed?
According to the community, the ricevuta is a receipt from the post office that the KIT has been accepted, one per envelope. It confirms that you applied for renewal in time, and it is needed while you wait for the appuntamento and the new card. It is worth carrying the original with you. Verify the current details on poste.it - this is not legal advice.
When are fingerprints taken at renewal?
According to the community, when arranging the KIT you are immediately given an appuntamento at the questura for fingerprints, and this date often turns out to be several months away. You come to the appointment with the full set of documents. This is normal as long as you hold the ricevuta confirming submission. Check on questure.poliziadistato.it - this is not legal advice.
How much does it cost to renew a permesso?
According to the community, on submission you pay a state fee for each adult, a separate marca da bollo for each envelope and a charge for the KIT itself, plus a small post-office commission; for children the amount is usually reduced. According to the community, the marca da bollo is often taken at a face value of 16 EUR, but this changes. The specific figures change from year to year - verify the current details on poste.it.
Can I apply for renewal earlier than 90 days out?
According to the community, yes: 90 days (from June 2026, D.Lgs 83/2026) is a 'no later than' benchmark, and a strict upper limit on 'how early' is usually not named. In regions with long queues people submit the KIT noticeably earlier so that the appuntamento does not move far past the expiry date. But if the fingerprints are scheduled before the old card expires, the new term may be counted earlier and a month or two may, as it were, be lost. Do not confuse this with a different rule: a card overdue by more than 60 days with no KIT filed counts as illegal stay. Check on interno.gov.it.
Do banks and services accept the ricevuta instead of the permesso?
According to the community, not everywhere: the Poste bank and some institutions work with the ricevuta, while some mobile banks after the card's term expires may block it and not accept the ricevuta as a substitute. For legal stay and the appointment at the questura the ricevuta is sufficient, but for particular services it is better to check in advance. Verify the current details on poste.it - this is not legal advice.
